Behind the Mask

María Fernanda Chávez Guiñez (Inia Gwath) is an independent scholar who runs Books from Faeries, formerly known as “Books from Fangorn”. She reads among the trees and discovers books through their leaves when she is not writing or studying. She has a creative soul who loves nature and volunteering in educational and environmental non-profit organizations.

María Fernanda is very proud to have volunteered in numerous non-profit organizations.

She studied English Literature and Linguistics at Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, a professional career that lasted four years in her country. Additionally, she has an Art History minor, and, some studies in archaeology and anthropology, at the already-mentioned university.

She is currently pursuing a MA in Archaeology at Universidad de Chile.

  • At Oxonmoot 2020, she gave a talk on feminism and J.R.R. Tolkien’s works, focussing on Ungoliant and Shelob.

  • Author of The Call of the Spiders: A Feminist Reading of J.R.R. Tolkien’s Ungoliant and Shelob. The talk was given at Oxonmoot 2020, and the paper can be found here.
  • Co-author of “International Interactions with Tolkien – A Roundtable” published by File 770. Which is available here.

  • Editor of The Oxonmoot Anthology of Poetry for The Tolkien Society. Her poem, “Gollum and the Ring” was also included in the 2020 version.

  • Online poems published at All Poetry, since 2014, under her penname Inia Gwath.
  • She has also written in the Hispanic fansite inspired by J.R. R. Tolkien’s works, El Poney Pisador, under the penname Laurë Anárion.
